Prof. Barbosa took part in the Phase 1 project meeting of Data Center Cooling: No Water Consumption and Peak Load Reduction Using Cold Underground Thermal Energy Storage (Cold UTES), held at the National Laboratory of the Rockies on 30 June – 1 July 2026 and convened with the DOE Office of Geothermal.

The meeting disseminated Phase 1 results on facility-level cooling system modeling, data center load projections, and grid impact analysis of Cold UTES deployment at scale, alongside stakeholder perspectives on borehole and aquifer thermal energy storage. Louisiana State University was one of ten invited stakeholder organizations.
